Family Weekend 2010* General registration for Family Weekend will begin on
Mark your calendars for Family Weekend 2010 and plan on joining your student in Austin for this very special weekend of fun and festivities. This is the perfect opportunity to visit your new Longhorn, see how they are adjusting to college life, meet their new friends and their families, and make new memories as you join UT administrators, staff, students and other parents at the Welcome Reception and Fiesta, Family Weekend Barbecue, college/school activities, photos with Bevo, Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium field viewing and much more. Learn about the organizations, people and places that have become important to your student. GENERAL REGISTRATION WILL BEGIN on Thursday, August 12. You may register online or by calling our toll-free number (1-888-690-0012). Online registration will end at midnight on Friday, October 8 and phone registration will end at 5 p.m. on the same date. We encourage you to register as soon as possible for the various tours and events since participation in some events is limited. Before registering online or by calling the Texas Parents office, please take a minute to read the important information below, which should answer most questions you may have about Family Weekend 2010. We hope to see you there!
GENERAL INFORMATION: 1. All family members and friends are invited to attend. 2. We encourage you talk to your UT student about which events he or she would like to attend. It will make your planning easier if you are on “the same page” as your student. 3. Parents and family members may attend events without their UT student. 4. Dress is casual at all events. Since events are spread out over this large campus, we encourage you to wear comfortable shoes. 5. Austin is a popular destination, so we suggest you make your hotel accommodations as soon as you can. For a list of hotels/motels in the Austin area, you can go to: http://www.utexas.edu/austin/housing.html. 6. Some events will be cancelled in case of rain. Those events are: photographs with Bevo and the Stadium Field Viewing. 7. Many parents wonder why Family Weekend is no longer held when the UT Longhorn football team is playing at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. There are several reasons for this change. Football tickets had become almost impossible for parents to obtain (if they didn’t hold season tickets), parking was a problem and it had become difficult for parents to make hotel reservations. After much discussion and consideration, Texas Parents staff, Advisory Board members and other UT administrators made the decision to change Family Weekend to an away-game weekend. The result of this change has been extremely positive. Attendance is up and the focus of the weekend is now on academics and family togetherness. GENERAL REGISTRATION INFORMATION 1. You have two options for registering for Family Weekend. You may either register online or by calling our toll-free number, 1-888-690-0012. If you register online, you will receive a confirmation email, sent to the email address you provided during registration. 2. Most events are free-of-charge but for some there is a small fee, which can be paid through our secure online site with a credit card or by sending a check to Texas Parents. Costs are notated on each event site. 3. If paying by check, make the check out to The University of Texas and send to: Texas Parents, The University of Texas, 1 University Station D7500, Austin, TX 78712. Please include a note listing those activities for which you are paying. 4. Many of the tours and events have limited seating or space and sell out very quickly. Those include the Austin Duck Adventure Tours, Glow-in-the-Dark Bowling, Kayaking on Lady Bird Lake, Stadium Viewing, and the Blanton Museum Tours. We suggest you register for any of those events as soon as possible. 4. Photographs with Bevo are strictly on a first-come, first-served basis. It begins at noon on the Gregory Gym Plaza. Families often line up as early as 11 a.m. in order to insure they get one of these special photos. We do not take reservations for that event. 5. We do not take online reservations for the Glow-in-the-Dark Bowling at the Union. To make a reservation, you must call the Texas Parents office at 1-888-690-0012. 6. For most of the events and tours, tickets are not needed nor will they be available. If you register for an event for which a ticket is needed, it will be provided in your Family Weekend packet which you will pick up at Family Weekend Check-In on Friday, October 15 or Saturday, October 16. HOW TO REGISTER ONLINE 1. First, scroll down to the bottom of this page and click “Register for Family Weekend Now.” When you get to our registration page, on your left you will see listed “Family Weekend”. Click there. 2. Again, on your left you will see four subcategories listed: College and School Activities, Tours and Events, Family Weekend Check-In and Family Weekend Parking Cards. --College and School Activities: Detailed information about the events planned and coordinated by the various colleges and schools within UT Austin. Please note: Parents and families should only register/attend the event(s) of the college/school in which their student is currently enrolled. For example, if your student is enrolled in the College of Natural Sciences, you should not register for or attend the College of Communication events. --Tours and Events: Detailed information about the tours and events scheduled during the weekend. There is truly something for everyone to enjoy. The events include the Welcome Reception and Fiesta, Texas Parents Barbecue, Stadium Viewing, photos with Bevo, kayaking on Lady Bird Lake and much more. Some tours are available at various times so please select your dates/times carefully. --Family Weekend Check-In: Information about the booth where parents can go to pick up their personalized registration packet (see details below), ask questions and get information. --Family Weekend Parking Card: Information about the special-event garage parking card and purchase opportunities. REGISTRATION DEADLINE 1. Online registration ends at midnight on Friday, October 8. 2. Phone registration ends at 5 p.m. on Friday, October 8. REFUND POLICY AND CHANGES If you need to make changes to any of the events for which you have registered, you must do so by calling Texas Parents (1-888-690-0012). We encourage you to select your activities carefully because we are UNABLE TO GIVE REFUNDS for paid tickets. FAMILY WEEKEND CHECK-IN: Personalized schedule, tickets, map and more. We strongly encourage you to visit us at Family Weekend Check-In. You will be able to pick up a personalized packet which will include your very own schedule, any event tickets you have ordered, your Family Weekend parking card if you ordered one, a campus map, updated information regarding all events and much more. You will be able to ask questions, get information and purchase a Texas Parents membership or merchandise, including Family Weekend T-shirts. PARKING INFORMATION For a flat rate, you may purchase a special-event swipe card providing come-and-go privileges at all seven parking garages on the UT campus during Family Weekend. The cards can be purchased two ways. If you order online before October 8, the cost will be $15 and the card will be included in your Family Weekend registration packet, which can be picked up at Family Weekend Check-In on Friday or Saturday. Or, you can purchase a swipe card upon arrival in Austin at Family Weekend Check-In or the Brazos or San Jacinto garages for $25. The cards will be valid from noon on October 15 until 6 p.m. on October 17. NOTE: Brazos and San Jacinto are the only garages normally open on the weekends. Parents will only be able to access the other five UT Garages with the special-event swipe card.
